How mattress sales and discounts work

Updated 10 January 2026 · 4 min read

Mattresses are discounted more aggressively and more constantly than almost any other household purchase. Understanding why makes the numbers easier to read.

Reference prices need context

A struck-through price is only meaningful if the mattress was genuinely sold at that price for a reasonable period.

The more useful comparison is what the same model costs at other retailers right now, and what it has cost over recent weeks.

When prices actually move

The predictable points in the UK calendar are January, Easter, late-May bank holiday, Black Friday and Boxing Day.

New model launches also matter: last year's version often drops in price once a replacement appears.

What we track

We record the price we see for each mattress size at each retailer over time, so a discount can be read against its own history rather than against an RRP.
