UK mattress size guide

UK mattress sizes are not the same as European or US sizes, and the names are not always used consistently by retailers. These are the standard British measurements.
The standard UK sizes
Single: 90 x 190cm (3ft x 6ft 3in). Small Double: 120 x 190cm (4ft). Double: 135 x 190cm (4ft 6in). King: 150 x 200cm (5ft). Super King: 180 x 200cm (6ft).
Note that single, small double and double are all 190cm long, while king and super king are 200cm. If you are over about 6ft tall, that extra 10cm is worth having.
UK sizes are not EU sizes
A European double is 140 x 200cm and an EU king is 160 x 200cm. If you buy a mattress sized in EU measurements, UK fitted sheets and bed frames will not line up properly.
Check the measurements in centimetres on the listing rather than trusting the size name alone.
How much space each person gets
On a double, two adults have 67.5cm each — narrower than a single mattress. A king gives 75cm each and a super king 90cm each.
If you can fit a king and afford the bedding, most couples notice the difference more than they expect.
Measure before you order
Measure the bed frame's internal dimensions, not the outside, and check the mattress depth against the frame's sides.
Also measure doorways, landings and stair turns. Rolled foam and hybrid mattresses are far easier to carry upstairs than a sprung mattress in a box.
